Take Field Trips !
FEEL FREE TO TAKE FIELD TRIPS WITH YOUR CLASS !!
TAKE YOUR CLASS OUTSIDE !
- Take your class outside for educational purposes !
- Examine the exterior of the car. Tell the class to always walk around the car to see if
there are any new scratches, dents, cracks in the windows, tires that need air
- Open up the hood of the car & discuss the parts of the car. Discuss how the parts
work separately & how the systems work together. Feel free to have the students bring
their study materials or their class activities to follow along !
- Walk to the Jiffy Lube or Oil Change Place. Bring the drivers education vehicle
& allow the staff to describe the main parts of the car, engine, exhaust, brakes,
shocks, struts. Let them put the car on racks to hoist the car for a better demonstration.
Have them discuss the importance of proper car maintenance.
- Have the students look inside the car. Discuss the controls, gauges, buttons, levers
& components inside the car & explain how each component or device works.
- Examine the exterior of the car. Tell the class to always walk around the car to see if
there are any new scratches, dents, cracks in the windows, tires that need air
- Discuss the colors of the fluids that may be left on the ground:
- Clear Water
- Green Radiator Fluid / Coolant
- Red Power Steering
- Purple Transmission Fluid
- Brown- Brake Fluid
- Black Oil
- Show the class how to change a flat tire. Show the students: Where the jack and lug nut
wrench are located, How to take off the hub cap, Unscrew the lug nuts, How to position the
jack, How to take off the old tire, How to put on the new tire
- Invite an auto mechanic to your classroom or let them go outside & give a
presentation about vehicle maintenance.
- Show the BLIND SPOT AREAS: Have students get into the car & let them see where the
blind spot areas are located. While they are standing outside of the vehicle, show the
class the blind spot areas. Then have students sit in the drivers seat & show
them the blind spots. Let students also try to locate the areas of the blind spots while
they are using their mirrors.
- Take the class outside & show them the actual effects of drinking alcohol. Have the
students: "WALK THE LINE" Allow the students wear the drunk busters "beer
goggles".
Use a line in the parking lot or on the side of the road & have the students
"walk the line". You may also have the students attempt to pick up objects on
the ground or catch nerf balls !! Have fun with this one & enjoy !!
- COUNT THE CARS. Go to the nearest intersection that has a TRAFFIC SIGNAL or STOP SIGN.
Have the students bring a notebook & pen to record the drivers that pass through the
intersection. Discuss results in the classroom ! Have the students record the number of
cars:
- Making legal & complete stops & stop behind the line
- Making illegal stops or dont stop behind the line
Or
- Yielding to the other cars, correctly
- Not yielding to the other cars, correctly
Or
- Proceeding safely through the intersections
- Proceeding dangerously through the intersections
Or
- Using turn signals
- Not using turn signals
- Walk to a dangerous intersection and let the students write down all of the elements
that make the intersection dangerous. Discuss results at the dangerous intersection or go
back to the classroom to review their answers & explanations.
