Chapter # 1 in the Drive Right Textbook
Welcome
Introductions of todays topics & material that the students
will be covering.
Explain the lesson agenda & what you will be covering in class.
Explain what you will be covering in Part 1 & Part 2.
Take attendance.
- Cover any of the unfinished chapter information from the previous day,
chapter # 3
answer any questions regarding permit information or on basic skills of
driving or basic parts of the car.
Required Activity:
- Who Is the Responsible Driver?
- Pass out the Activity, Who is the Responsible Driver? Have the students
list as many attributes of a good driver & bad driver. Discuss the results &
identify how you can spot out a good driver & a bad driver

- Crossword Puzzle - Chapter # 1, You are the driver.
- Pass out the Activity, Crossword Puzzle Chapter # 1, You are the
Driver.
Have students work on the activity, individually. Remind the students to
do a good job on this "starter activity" Let them know that the activity will
need to be turned in, later in the class. Remind the students that they will get similar
"starter activities" when they arrive, each day in class. This comment will
prepare the students to do a good job on the starter activities & it will let them
know that you will be collecting the activities, as well.
Follow up Activity:
- Have the students read & review chapter # 1, from the Drive Right
Textbook.
- Cover pages 4 14. Go over questions & answers from Reviewing
Chapter Objectives on page 15. Questions # 1 10
- Discuss questions from the chapter test on page 16, # 1 14.
- Review the Decision Making Questions on Page 17, # 1 4.

Recommended Class videos to show:
- Feel Free to show any of the videos, that you did not
already, show to the class from, the previous days..
- Responsibilities of Driving 14 minutes
- All State, TEEN DRIVERS 13 minutes
Required videos to show, during the second part of
class:
- Smith System Video # 1, A
Cushion For Safety 15 minutes
Part 2: Introduction of the Smith System,
The Five Keys of the Smith System
- Pass out the Notes: FIVE KEYS OF THE SMITH SYSTEM
- Read / Discuss & Review all Five Keys and all of the components.
- Remind the students that they will have to memorize all five keys &
all of the components. This set of notes will be helpful in order to pass the smith system
quiz on day # 7.
- Some good, easy, simple Mnemonic memory devices
that are helpful to remember the smith system:
- All Five Keys are in alphabetical order - AGKLM
- All Good Kids Like Milk
- All Good Kids Like Movies
- All Good Kids Love Mom
- Show Video: SMITH SYSTEM, VIDEO # 1
A Cushion for Safety 15 minutes
- Activity: Smith System, A Better Way
After the first smith system video, pass out the activity,
Smith System, A Better Way.
Remind the students that there is a word bank to help find the answers.
